February Update!

First Visitation Day

Becky went to visit the children on their first visitation day.  She emailed, "They did their interviews very well and I am glad to report to you that no one was pushed back to their previous classes."  Becky brought treats for the children and they enjoyed the afternoon together.

The children greeted her upon her arrival.
How sweet is this?

Second Visitation Day

Emma went to visit the children on the second visitation day.  They were of course so happy to see him!  Emma wrote about the visit:

"The children are really doing well and right at this point of the term they are preparing for the first elections of the school prefects (highest school honor in Uganda) and a number of them have put in their applications to contest as pupil heads in the school.  They are very happy, clean and love the school.  This is really good and it will help them to speak good English (Uganda's national language).  Now they told me that they are to try very hard to campaign and week for the votes from their fellow friends."

A Trip to the Zoo and Museum

An anonymous donor sponsored a trip for the children to go to the zoo and a museum.  Doctor Mufumba wrote to us about the trip.  Thank you!

"The children have a lot to tell about the museum and the zoo.  They have seen things like the early man, skeletons of birds and animals, casted snakes, the very first car in Uganda, and different attires for different tribes (including the Karamojong).  Right now we are enjoying the cool breeze from the lake as we get lunch and then we shall be looking at different wildlife."

Happy Graduation Auntie Becky!

Becky, the new matron, graduated from Makarere University with a degree in IT this month!  Congratulations Becky!

Luke and Becky

"It was really a wonderful day for me and the entire PFP family.  They really welcomed me back with cheers and also requested to take photos in my gown as a sign of giving them my blessings.  They promised to work hard to achieve what I have achieved today and even much more.  I have to assure you, these kids have got potential to graduate some day to come, they really got so inspired when they saw me in my gown today.  Believe me we will have very many degrees, Masters and even Doctorates in this home."
--Becky

The children posed in Becky's cap and gown.  Becky requested that we keep these photos safe and print and give them to each child once they graduate from university.  What a great and fun idea!

Career Workshop

The career workshop came to an end as the children have returned to school.  Thank you Doctor Mufumba for all of your hard work in executing the workshop!

"The children were so happy to learn of different career opportunities.  At the end of the final lesson the following expressed the desire to become specialists:

Tikol wants to become a dentist
Agnes Longok wants to become an anesthesiologist
Agnes Lotuke wants to become an orthopedic officer
Allan wants to become an opthalmic clinical officer
Kure Bosco wants to become a dental officer

Thank you for this program!"

A NEW school!

The children are now attending Victoria Junior School, a private boarding school that "offers high quality and comprehensive education to the pupils."  It is based in Namutumba Town in the Eastern part of Uganda and is one of the best primary schools in all of Uganda.  The children are especially excited for the sports and music programs that the school offers.

Backpacks

Every year the August delegation brings each child a backpack from his or her sponsor or from a generous donor.  This year we will ask each sponsor to fill the backpack with the following list of items:
  • Two outfits
  • Underwear
  • Socks
  • Shoes
  • Bathing suit
  • Goggles
  • 1 book
  • 1 toy/game/piece of jewelry (not to exceed $20 and no electronics, please)
The reason we are providing guidelines this year is because in the past some children have received more than others.  Let us know if you have any questions or concerns and as always thank you so much for doing something a little extra for the children!

December Update!

The PFP Board of Directors decided that this year the children should focus less on material gifts and more on giving to others and maintaining tradition. We put your generous donations toward a beautiful meal in the slums of Masese that the children shared with their families. The children also went to Doctor Mufumba's village to dance and feast, on a trip to Didi's World, a local amusement park, and each child received a new holiday outfit.

Thank you for your contributions!
It was a Christmas to remember!

"The relatives were very happy and appreciative for your contribution toward making their Christmas a delicious one."

Doctor Mufumba's Village

Doctor Mufumba's village welcomed the PFP children for their annual Christmas celebration.

The kids showered and got ready to travel to the village since the long awaited day had finally come. We reached the village at around 9:00 a.m. and the kids were given breakfast before going to church. Then the kids proceeded to church with the rest of the people. Lunch was finally served which composed of matooke, rice, spaghetti, irish potatoes, meat, chicken, chapatti and pineapples. Entertainment then followed where all the kids tried their dancing abilities both in local and western dances. As an appreciation the kids were given jackfruit, pawpaw and some organes that they carried back home. We finally came back home very tired, happy and satisfied.

Our children are such good guests!

"I was amazed with the level of involvement in the morning preparations at Budoma just after they had finished taking tea. For example both of the older Agneses plus others decided to go and wash the cups and plates they had used without anyone asking them. Friday and some others offered to join the home children in running after catching the six hens and cocks that were to be slaughtered. Mark was our pastor who prayed for the breakfast and also prayed for forgiveness of one another for our sins.

Thank you for hosting Doctor Mufumba! Thank you to everyone who contributed to this wonderful celebration! The children had such a wonderful time.

We want to thank you and all the supporters for co-funding this big event, your contribution no doubt led to great success."

Didi's World

"We are right here at the Wonder World (Didi's World). The children have so far enjoyed different games like horse ride, caterpillar ride and sky ride. We (myself, Emma, Becky and Fred) also joined them during the octopus ride. They have just finished swimming and are back waiting to be served lunch then we shall continue with more games.

Career Workshop

Each holiday PFP hires teachers from the Ugandan community to teach a supplemental course. This term the children will be learning about career opportunities in Uganda. Our hope is that this workshop will encourage and motivate our children to do well in school so that they can eventually attend university and become contributing members of their society.

"I was clad in my white gown with a stethoscope hanging around my neck. I explained what a doctor does and asked Friday to help me demonstrate what a doctor does. I also allowed some of the children to listen to each others heartbeats, it was exciting to them. I emphasized the importance of learning and loving english, biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics in order to attain a degree in medicine or surgery. They asked me questions and I answered appropriately. It was a good exercise and five boys and one girl expressed the desire to become doctors.

--Doctor Mufumba

Reading Program

Becky, the new matron, has started a wonderful reading program for the children while they're on holiday.

"I have drafted a simple database showing the names of the kids and the novels they will be reading. The children will begin reading around 10-11:30 a.m. And to make this reading effective, I have decided that before going to bed, everyone will be giving us a sneak preview of what they read in the morning. At the end of the week, which is next Monday, I will be giving you the names of the best readers in our home."

--Becky

Bad News for Emma

Emma broke his ankle playing soccer with the children on sports day but he is still in good spirits.
